Technical Theater

Technical Theater

Welcome to the Theatre Department at Orange Grove! Please see our separate document about Dates & Department Fees. Our approach to teaching Technical Theatre - and its many independent skill sets - is to treat each class as a Production Team. All classes emphasize the qualities of being a LEADER and a HELPER. We will “circle up” around a table for Production Meetings and practice our discussion skills of listening to one person talk at a time, making eye contact, nodding as a sign of comprehension and support, taking notes, and sharing ideas in a think tank. Key skills learned in our classes are: Work Ethic and Time Management. This year we are happy to announce that we have divided the course material for Technical Theatre into two different course tracks, Technical Theatre and Costume Design. All classes will be studying Planning, Analysis, Puppetry, Portfolios and Sewing (with a sewing machine). Our TECHNICAL THEATRE class will cover Lighting, Sound, Scenery, Props and Publicity. Our COSTUME DESIGN class will cover Costume/Fashion, Stage Makeup and Wigs. Our ADVANCED TECHNICAL THEATRE class requires Teacher Approval, and will be primarily focused on production work for our Fall One Act and Spring Play. This requires not only an exemplary track record for behavior and attitude, but also prior experience in all aspects of Technical Theatre taught at Orange Grove. Only students in the Advanced Tech class will serve as our Tech Crew for those productions, requiring attendance at all rehearsals and performances. Technical Rehearsals count as a Quiz Grade and Performances count as a Test Grade. All potential conflicts must be discussed in advance between a parent and the teacher, as those assessments are “live” and cannot be made up. [All dates are listed on our document about Dates.] CREW OPPORTUNITY: Any students enrolled in a Technical Theatre course may sign up to work Crew for the Winter Extravaganza at Blake HS on December 14. This is an all-day commitment. PUPPETS: All classes may have some part in the creation of original Puppets to be used in this year’s Spring Play. MATERIALS / DEPARTMENT FEE: Our Department Fee - due by Sept. 27 - covers all materials that your student requires to do the class projects as assigned. [See our Dates & Department Fees document for all additional information.]
